Healing time
4 weeks to 3 months
Pain level
The smiley, also called upper lip frenulum piercing, passes through the thin band of tissue connecting the upper lip to the gum. It stays hidden when the mouth is closed and shows itself when smiling — hence the name. Healing typically takes 4 to 12 weeks.
Compatible jewelry
BCR ring or curved barbell in ASTM F136 titanium (small diameter recommended during healing).
Aftercare
Rinse with an alcohol-free mouthwash diluted 50/50 with water after every meal. Avoid playing with the jewelry, pulling on the frenulum, or eating very hard foods. Maintain regular dental hygiene with a soft toothbrush.
Contraindications
Frenulum too thin or absent, fixed dental braces, poor oral hygiene, active cold sores.
